Thermostatic Expansion Valve. What is it and Why is it Important?
A thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) plays a large role in your AC's functionality. This part regulates the flow of refrigerant to your evaporator coil during a cooling cycle. It is a small part that has a large responsibility.
The TXV is located near the indoor evaporator coil that uses a small sensor which connects to the gas line leaving the evaporator. It creates a loop to increase or decrease the flow of refrigerant to regulate temps. This protects the compressor from overheating.
An electronic expansion valve (EEV) is a little more technical. It provides more precise refrigerant flow to the evaporator coil. An electrical controller is responsible for opening and closing a needle valve of the EEV.
Troubleshooting and maintenance on TXV or EEV parts should only be done by licensed HVAV technicians where they can inspect the parts along with associated components and your system as a entire working unit.
Each variety of valve can last as long as the life of your heating or cooling system provided it gets regular maintenance and service appointments. If your AC starts blowing warm air, or if your evaporator coil starts to freeze, your valve could be the issue. Call a qualified tech to have it serviced.
